Playing with sand
Children can build castles, make roads or arrange toys in the sand. Filling and emptying a bucket, changing a shape and starting a new structure can be parts of the same game. Because children decide what to make, a small change can lead to another idea.
Children playing together can agree on a shared structure or continue their own games side by side. Parents can listen to what their child wants to make and help with the plan. Handling the sand, trying something and starting again are as much part of play as finishing a shape.
